2024 Capstone Exhibition. The work I create reflects a lifelong fascination with myth, fairytale, and folklore. This fascination crystalized while living with the Yolngu in Arnhem Land, where ancient stories communicate the lay of the land, the location of resources, and rights and ownership of the same. In the bush, without this heritage, they would be lost. And me? I relied on their knowledge like a compass and never strayed. I saw in their practices a potential parallel using the stories handed down in my culture through the ages: not for reading the physical landscape, necessarily, but for negotiating western society and navigating its perils. What are myths, fairytales, and folklore but model events that play out again and again with different costumes and players? And what is human behavior but their unceasing reenactment? For this exhibition I explored these archetypes in clay. I used the material to contemplate their outcomes and tease out their symbols as a means to prepare myself when I encounter them outside of my studio, to recognize in which story I am caught, which role I am playing, and whether or not I want to continue the performance or bow out for a better part.
